You are not alone

Are you fighting a losing battle trying to get motivated to lose weight? Many people won't achieve their weight loss goals because they can't figure out how to get themselves motivated enough to stick to their resolutions.

You probably already know many tips on how to get motivated but harnessing your will power and keeping motivation high is a different story.

Just start! The hardest part is starting. Can you walk 5 minutes a day? DO THAT! Just get moving. Pretty soon you'll find that you can add more time & find more ways to add in more calorie burning activities to your day.

Set yourself up for success. Instead of relying solely on will power, create an envoronment that works for you instead of against you. Find some healthy buddies to hang out with. Clear your cupboards with healthy treats. Place inspiring quotes where you can see them. Take time to reflect on how you are feeling and where you are at. Hire a coach to keep you accountable!

Making small, achievable goals help to keep you motivated and stay on track. If you are an "all or nothing" person, breaking your goal down into "baby steps" to get you to where you want to be could be the right answer. Are you willing to try this if the way you've been doing things isn't really working?

A good way to get started is to take one or two things you want to change and focus on that for a month. Once that becomes a habit, add a couple of more the following month. After just a few rounds, you'll notice major improvements in your health & well being.
Doesn't this sound like something you could do?

If your answer is yes, I've got something special for you. I have a 30-day challenge starting on January 6th. Please email me if you would like to hear more about it! coach@motivatemelissa.com

Blind Faith

I heard Marianne Williamson speak last year. It made me see Christmas in a whole new light. She related the birth of Christ metaphysically. The birth of Christ can be experienced in your heart by reaching a state of enlightenment. Jesus was in a constant state of enlightenment. The word "enlightenment" is defined as "a state of transcendent divine experience" or "a blessed state marked by the absence of desire or suffering". Jesus spent his life spreading the word of his experience and teaching others how to reach this state.

I turned away from all religion many years ago. I was a skeptic & had many doubts. Recently, I have been learning how to put my ego aside and be humble & open, see things with new eyes. I think it is very honorable to have blind faith. It takes a tremendous amount of trust & humbleness to have faith in the unseen. I think it also takes a lot of courage to put fear & doubt aside and believe in something that cannot be scientifically proven. I also see that having FAITH is a very important aspect when creating goals & finding success. You create a goal, something you have never achieved before. A goal is usually achieved by doing something you have never done before. You have to trust that the actions you take will result in the goal that you have imagined for yourself being reached without having concrete evidence or certainty that it will happen.

Over the past year, I have heard many very successful people speak & I do find that a lot of times there is a common thread. Many of them attribute their success to God. They all have a tremendous amount of blind faith & in having that, they are able take huge risks and step out in faith, without which, they would never gotten to where they were today or reached level of success they have attained. They trust that what they do will get them where they need to go or at least closer to that. If they had to much doubt and skepticism they would probably not believe it would happen & would not attempt to reach their goals at all. I encourage you to practice a little blind faith and take a step towards your dreams and trust that the path will show up as you walk towards your great future.

Peace Love & Strength. Merry Christmas.

The Greatest Gift

Do you know someone who keeps talking about working out, getting healthy or getting back on track? Are they all talk & no action? How about giving them a little push?

During the weekend of Black Friday/Cyber Monday, Team Beachbody is offering huge discounts on a bunch of products! The offer is valid for a LIMITED TIME ONLY starting Wednesday November 27th 12PM PST until Monday December 2nd 11:59PM PST. Quantities are limited - I know from experience, they sell out FAST!

Take a peek at what's up for grabs, right HERE

This TurboFire complete system is one of the best deals I've seen!

To me, the best investment you can make is one in yourself & your own well being. And I don't think you can even put a price on that! You will not find me waiting on line anywhere on Black Friday. It's just not worth it to me. I'd rather spend that time enjoying friends & family! On the other hand, taking a few minutes to click a few buttons for great savings on things that I could really use in my life? OK, you got me! Kind of bummed Results & Recovery isn't on sale! Hmmm, I do have my eye on Asylum, though! I'm in my first week of a P90X/Insanity hybrid & once I'm done, I'll think I'll be ready. Even if I can't straighten my arms today, so sore!

I hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving!

Cheers!

My Journey

I have always struggled with my weight. Since I was about 8 years old. I found comfort in food. Besides being called freckle face and ugly, I was then tormented and teased for being fat. I was always trying to lose weight. I would order crazy pills from the backs of magazines, I would go on crazy starvation diets and workout 2 times a day. I managed to keep the weight of for the most part but the damage was done. In my head, I was still fat. I was less than. I was not worthy.

When I went away to college, I gained the ominous freshman 10 - which was really 30. TIired of wearing elastic waist bands, I started a 90 day challenge and lost the extra 30 pounds. I yo-yo'ed for the next several years, keeping it off for the most part, but never making any progress. In the last few years, I started losing the battle and my weight started creeping up again. I was suffering from bouts of depression and feeling hopeless. I had given up on trying to be fit and accepted that I would be out of shape the rest of my life. I hated looking in the mirror. My closet was getting smaller and smaller as less stuff was fitting everyday. I was hiding my body in large tops and leggings. I would also hide my body in pictures- or avoid being photographed at all.

I used my weight as an EXCUSE for not achieving things in life. In October of 2011, I stuffed myself into my first spanx. I felt resigned - like it was too late, might as well face it, this was what I was dealt, time for compression undergarments. I was still trying tho, I was juicing.  But I was not in a good place- I was juicing but not adjusting the rest of my lifestyle to that, I was still gaining weight.

This is embarrassing to admit. When I would go out and drink socially I would BLACK OUT. Not good. Like Snooky-style. I couldn’t believe it. I NEVER believed that people REALLY don’t remember what they do when they get that drunk. I thought they were lying, or just lying to themselves. Nope, WRONG. I learned this lesson the hard way. As a matter of fact, the night this picture was taken I blacked out & fell. I woke up with a badly bruised (probably sprained) foot. I couldn’t workout for a month and I decided to give up juicing.

Needless to say, with the holidays right around the corner, my weight started steadily increasing. It wasn’t until mid March of 2012 that I found Beachbody and found the motivation to change my life for the better. I was googling late one night "before/after weight loss" desperately searching for any motivation to get myself off of the path I was going down and came across a Youtube of someone's transformation form P90X. I reached out to that person, who became my coach and thru her motivationan, mentoring and support, I was able to turn my ship around. I lost 15 pounds in 60 days.

I've kept it off for the last year and continue to lose and tone and now I have become a coach myself. I have met SO many amazing people. I am so EXCITED to be on this journey. More important than the physical changes I have been experiencing... Since finding Beachbody, I have gained back FAITH in myself & the power of believing in myself...that I AM capable. I have the power to do anything I set out to do. That I am worthy of my place in the world & I have the power achieve my dreams. I want to be the best person I can be and I am helping others do the same.

Hello Everyone!

November is a month many of us focus on gratefulness. Being grateful is such a great gift to give yourself. Not only does it feel good, but when your heart is full of gratitude there is not much room for negative feelings like anger, resentment & fear. This helps keep you happy healthy and disease free!

I have a note above my bed that reads "What are you grateful for right here, right now?" I love it. It keeps me in the present and keeps me in a state of gratitude.

Today I am grateful for being surrounded by some really amazing mentors. Being open to listeneing, learning & taking action has resulted in exponential growth in my business this month.

What are you grateful for today?

Success Leaves Clues...

Roni (Age 53)

"I am 53, and food and weight issues have been a curse my entire life. When I was about 11 or 12 years old, a dinner guest in our home said to my parents, "She certainly is well-fed!" My mom said, "Yes, we should probably put her on a diet. It's now about 40 years later, and I have probably tried everything. I've been a regular at the gym for the last 20 years or so, but have really wasted many hours doing cardio machines that my body had acclimated to. I found myself at the peak of my yo-yo cycle at 187 pounds. I was miserable. But it was so hard to just get started. I'd wake up in the morning with good intentions, and by mid afternoon it was all over. I would vow to "start tomorrow!" That happened many times until I found my coach & joined her challenge. I could see the difference in my body each week! I have never been this small before and I can finally buy the clothes I really like"

Calling all ladies that want to feel and look sexy!!! If that is you, join me in my next challenge!! Don't miss out....

I will be interviewing qualified canididates this week for this challenge starting on the 18th.

Message me NOW, I only have 5 spots. coach@motivatemelissa.com

Childish vs Childlike...

"Childlike makes a great scientist.
Childish produces tantrums.
Childlike brings fresh eyes to new opportunities.
Childish rarely shows up as promised.
Childlike is fearless and powerful and willing to fail.
Childish is annoying.
Childlike inquires with a pure heart.
Childish is merely ignored."

Missy Elliott & Nightmares

So, when I was younger I had a dream of dancing in a Missy Elliott video. She was an inspiration to me–not the typical video dancer & extremely talented!  I loved her creative music videos. I LOVE hip hop dancing! Here's the thing.... I did not dance in public until I was a Senior in high school. I was TERRIFIED of being SEEN. I've always been self-conscious of my body and it's held me back in many areas. It's such a silly setback & I've come to learn that being self-conscious is a very self-centered way of viewing the world. I think you would agree that most of us are so absorbed in our own lives & worried about ourselves that we really don't pay too much attention to how others look dancing and are more concerned about tripping over our own feet.
I take a hip hop class locally.  I love it. It is really fun and I get to let loose. That is, when I am not terrified and in my head and worried about the steps and how I look and if I mess up what will I do and I look like an idiot right now and I am so embarrassed and turning bright red... and then I take a deep breath and relax and remind myself to have FUN. Because when you get lost in the music it is just an amazing experience. Exhilerating & powerful. I've gotten pretty good at getting down the steps until the teacher comes over and watches me. I freeze. I fluster. I forget. I trip. Oh boy.  NIGHTMARE.
Here's the thing, I've got a new lease on life and I'm not going to let FEAR win!  I am going to get certified to be a Hip Hop Hustle Trainer myself! It's scary, exciting and I'm terrified but I can't wait. I am not thinking about actually getting in front of a class and teaching. I am taking baby steps. One obstacle at a time.
Anyways, I thought it was fitting  that this month, Shaun T's Dance Party Pack is on sale.  Dance is a great way to get moving and have fun while your doing it (and ease your way into exercising if you haven't yet).
Anyways, whatever you do, I hope you dance! ;)

Self Belief

100% belief = success I can honestly say the times I have failed are times that I didn't have full faith & belief in myself. At first I was going to say I wasn't 100% committed either but that's not true. If you truly believe you CAN there is no way you CAN'T! because you wont give up until you DO! Believe in yourself!!! No one else can do that for you and without that, you will never have success.

Don't Waste Your Potential

Are you sitting on buried treasure? I think every living breathing person is. I believe everyone dies before reaching our fullest potentional. We are all capable of amazing unfathomable things. Our worst enemy is ourselves. Our own doubt, denial and laziness. I will die fighting this. No matter how long it takes me. I am on an epic battle to unleash as much of my potential as possible before I leave this world. I believe I have only tapped the surface and I know I am capable of great things. And so are YOU!

How to stop eating your emotions & live a life you'll love

Do you eat because you are bored?
Do you eat because you are tired?
Do you eat because you are stressed?
Do you eat because you are happy?
Do you eat because you are sad?
Do you eat just because??

What is emotional eating? Basically whenever you eat when you are not hungry. Mindless munching, craving comfort foods, eating until you are way passed full. If you feel guilty after you eat, that is emotional eating. Emotional eating can sabotage our weight loss efforts, and is most likely the cause of our weight issues in the first place.

What causes emotional eating? Stress makes us crave greasy salty foods. Foods that give instant gratification, that quick hit of pleasure and quick burst of energy. The more stressed out you are, the more likely you are to turn to food for relief.  Food is also used as a temporary escape from emotions we don't feel comfortable feeling. Food is simply a distraction to avoid the situations we find ourselves in. It could be money, relationships, love, family, career- food is a cheap and easy distraction. Emotional eating can also stem from habits we picked up as kids. Food could be used as a reward or driven by nostalgia & the memories it brings up. Emotional eating can also be caused by social situations - simply because it is there and everyone else is eating.

So now that I've talked about what causes emotional eating, where do we go from here?

We talk about HOW we can stop emotional eating.
The most effective weapon to combat emotional eating is having a strategy.
Planning.
You know the saying, failing to plan is planning to fail.
Without a plan we are on a free for all, anything goes and before we know it - we are packing on the pounds and pulling out the elastic waistbands. The best strategy to overcome emotional eating is to plan.
Plan what you will eat.
Plan when you will eat.
Plan for the unexpected.
Plan what to do when you get the urge to eat when you are not hungry.
Plan what to do when you find yourself shoving food in your face.
Plan what to do when you have totally blown it.

SO first, plan what you will eat.
This is pretty simple but it does take a little research and some forethought. I have Sunday as my planning day. I plan my meals for the week, make a grocery list and shop for the week. I make sure that my meals are plant based and mostly clean. I also have my shake for breakfast everyday so that takes care of that. I have salads for lunch - I'll add some nuts or beans and make my own dressing. Dinner is often some combination of roasted squash, quinoa, beans, and steamed veggies. There are so many great recipes available on line. If you need help with your meal planning or would like me to send you a sample meal plan, please shoot me an email asking for one and I'd be happy to help.

Planning when you will eat is pretty simple and so effective. If you get in the habit of eating at scheduled times, you won't find yourself at 5 in the afternoon ravished and reaching for some crappy junk food. You can set an alarm on your phone to remind you when to eat. There are even some apps. that will do it for you. I highly recommend doing this. It'll really help you stay on track.

Plan for the unexpected. Things happen. You get caught up in a tight deadline, you forgot your lunch at home, you are running errands all day and have lost track of time. It's inevitable. It's going to happen. So what do you do? Plan for the unexpected. Throw some snacks in your car. Some raw almonds or cashews, a few lara bars, even a couple of apples. Also keep them at your desk at work. If you forget your lunch, have a strategy, know where and what you will order - make sure you make it smart, no cheese, dressing on the side, no fries! Pick it out before you are starving and will eat anything at any cost.  Same goes if you are headed out to a restaurant. Look at the menu ahead of time or as soon as you get there. Make a smart choice and stick to it.

Plan what to do when you get the urge to eat when you are not hungry
ask yourself:
Am I hungry? If the answer is no. Then DON'T EAT. If the answer is yes, ask yourself,
Is this what I feel like eating? Do you really want to fuel your body with sugar and fat and salt and calories  that will just keep you fat and tired and further from your goal? If your answer is YES. Go back to the first question. are you REALLY hungry? Maybe you are just thirsty- make sure you are drinking tons of water! Often times we mistake thirst for hunger.
Last thing before you take that first bite....Is there something I could eat instead?
I used to work with this woman who told me she was griping it her boyfriend about being hungry and he told her to eat some carrots. We started saying "Hungry? Eat a carrot!" it was the office joke. Funny enough, it was sage advice and I use it to this day! Put that in your daily mantra. It will help keep it in the forefront of your mind & keep you on track.
So, when you are standing in front of the fridge ask yourself, would I eat a stick of celery right now? If the answer is no, you're not hungry! If the answer is YES! I'm hungry then go for it! Chow down on some celery- if you are ravished, have a few almonds, too or put a little peanut butter on the celery. How awesome do you feel right now? GO you! Give yourself a high five! Give yourself a gold star on your forehead! Write out a congratulatory note to yourself. "On this day, I really wanted to shove some cookies in my face, instead, I stopped myself and I ate some celery! Woo-hoo" Then write how you are feeling  because I bet you feel amazing! Breaking habits are hard. We crave stability. Everything in our nature fights to stay the same. We don't like change. So when you are able to conquer these small little victories, it's just a small glimpse of what you could accomplish. If you did it once, you can do it again! It may sound silly and trite but actually, it's not, it's huge. It's those small little things we do everyday that will lead to our demise or our success. So celebrate what gets you closer to your goal.

If you are not hungry but you have the urge to eat. Do something else instead. Seriously, distract yourself or better yet, work through the emotion, if you are not hungry, what are you feeling? Bored? Angry? Sad? Lonely? Hey if you're bored- go for a walk, dance, read a good book! If it's something you can't figure out or solve in the moment- if you don't really know what you are feeling, try journaling. Lots of things come out when we write. When we get it on paper we get it out of our head. We answer questions we didn't even know we had. We figure out things, come up with solutions. It just gives us a chance to let it out.  Most people don't write enough. I don't write enough. Writing is a HUGE tool in battling emotional eating. In fact, journaling everyday can really help you deal with those emotions that we satiate with food. As a matter of fact, there is a great book out there I'd like to recommend, "The Writing Diet" by Julia Cameron. She goes more in depth into what I am talking about and shares even more tools to help you use writing to overcome emotional eating.

Plan what to do when you find yourself shoving food in your face:
You might just blow thru those questions and say- SCREW IT! I'm HONGRY! And start shoveling chips in your throat. As soon as this happens pay attention. It doesn't have to be an all out pig fest. You can stop at anytime, YOU CAN! Because you know a little voice in your head is telling you that you are not really hungry, you should stop. Listen to that little voice. Stay calm. Put the chips down and back slowly away- then turn and run as fast as you can! Give yourself a few minutes to recover. Drink some water. Pace about. Then ask yourself, once again, "Am I truly hungry? What can I eat instead?

Plan what to do when you have totally blown it. You ate your emotions and now you feel even worse. You're staring at the bottom of an empty container of ice cream and asking yourself "what just happened?" in sugared out days with your stomach already starting to whine and groan back at you. Now, what do you do? Well, here's what you don't do, you don't beat yourself up. You don't forget about it and repeat it again tomorrow. You LEARN from it. Take a moment and think about how you feel. Take a mental snapshot of your physical and emotional state. I'm sorry, your body tells you when you've really blown it. You need to listen to your body. It would really help you if you wrote it down. Write down how you felt and post it on your refrigerator. Better yet, write a love letter to your future self. A gentle reminder of how your future self will feel, once again, staring at the bottom of a empty container of ice cream. Get as real, graphic and emotional as you can. Remember how your belly ached? How the skin stretched? How you just felt so uncomfortable? Not only that but you felt defeated. Upset, you let yourself down.

One other way to beat emotional eating? Recognize true physical hunger. I'm sure you've heard that it takes your mind a while to register that you are full. Often times we don't pay attention to that signal and we eat until we are STUFFED. Pay attention to  your hunger while you are eating. Usually food loses it's flavor in the first few bites, and we are just shoveling food in until our plate is empty out of habit.

Also, find a partner to keep you accountable and help you thru those times when all you want to do is drown your sorrows in drink or hunker down with a big bag of potato chips.

Learning to overcome you emotional eating will bring you so many rewards. Not only will it help you achieve a healthy weight, it will give you power in knowing what you have achieved. You will find ways to deal with your emotions instead of avoiding them. Life will be so much more satisfying and fulfilling.

Now, emotional eating doesn't happen overnight. It is deep rooted and something that usually has begun in childhood. Habits are not easy to break. It will take time, don't give up! If you continue to practice what I shared here, you will get a little better everyday.

Focus T25

Ok, people are FU-REEKING out about Shaun T's newest workout - Focus T25.
I know why. And I'm not going to lie. LOL! Because people are LAZY!
The workouts are only 25 minutes!
YES you will get results and YES the workouts are intense.
They HAVE to be for only being 25 minutes long!
The thing is, when you are only moving 25 minutes a day,
man, you have MORE minutes in the day to screw up all your progress with your
EATING! Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment, but I'm kind of excited about that.
I'm up for the challenge!  I am in my last week of Les Mills PUMP and I am
building some amazing muscle but to be honest, my nutrition has not been on point and
I am seeing that in my results. SO, I start T25 on August 5th. I'm excited to take those extra minutes I'm saving in my shorter workout to really FOCUS on my FOOD PLANNING!
SO if time has been your excuse & food has been your weakness... NOW is your chance.
C'mon, Join me!

STATurday

 Tomorrow is STATURDAY.
A few weeks ago we started doing this in our challenge group.  We all post our weight and waist measurement first thing Saturday mornings. I am totally against focusing on the scale and weighing yourself obsessively. However, if you totally avoid the scale you might get way off track. Also, the fact that it's Saturday morning, gives you the weekend to think about improving instead of blowing all the hard work you put in for the week (and keeps you form blowing your diet on Friday night).  This is a great way to take the emotion out of it. We just state our numbers and that's that. It was the first week of the challenge for many of them so they were hesitant but it's a great way to keep on track. One of my challengers lost 4 inches off of her waist 4 inches!!! Now, confession time, I was up 2 pounds. Wow. And an all time high since I started my journey over a year ago. Needless to say, it was a wake up call. I refocused on my meal planning and have been aiming to stay on track this week. I don't want to see those numbers again! Wish me luck for tomorrow.
It's not about being at your goal, it's about doing your best to stay accountable and to help keep your health and fitness in mind.
Post your STATurday stats below. C'mon, do it. Be accountable.

5. Lactose free and dairy free!
If you’re lactose intolerant or have trouble digesting whey protein, then this is the shake for you. Most people have trouble digesting dairy, whey protein, or animal proteins and don’t even know it—until they try a plant-based protein meal and they just feel the difference!

6. No fructose.
Chocolate Vegan is made with coconut flower nectar and luo han guo—two whole-food superfoods that are so naturally sweet, there’s no need to add fructose! We won’t get into the pros and cons of fructose, but suffice it to say that if you’re anti-fructose, then Chocolate Vegan or Tropical Strawberry are for you!

7. Protein PACKED.
One of the first questions vegans get is “Where do you get your protein from?” Well, plants have protein in them too! And so does vegan Shakeology. 16 grams in fact. Chocolate Vegan and Tropical Strawberry are crafted from an easy-to-assimilate blend of whole, plant-based proteins including sprouted brown rice, pea, sacha inchi, chia, flax, quinoa, amaranth, and spirulina. Not only do they offer 9 essential amino acids, but together they are a complete protein source with sufficiently high levels of lysine and methionine, two important amino acids that are often a limiting factor in plant-based diets.

8. Kiss cravings goodbye.
The new ingredient konjac root, in both Chocolate Vegan and Tropical Strawberry Shakeology, will help your cravings disappear! The fiber in this new wonder-food absorbs up to 200 times its weight in water, making you feel fuller, longer. No wonder places like Japan and China have been using it for centuries! Other perks include: help with regularity and healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

9. Take a bite out of the “Tree of Life.”
Chocolate Vegan’s new ingredient moringa is called the “Tree of Life,” because it is one of nature’s most nutritious foods. This superfood contains 90 nutrients and 46 antioxidants along with ALL of the essential amino acids. Plus, according to some studies, moringa can help boost energy, lead to faster recovery, and balance out blood sugar levels.

10. It’s got the stamp of approval.

We are committed to putting the most perfect whole-food ingredients at your fingertips so you can operate at your highest level of nutrition, health, and well-being!

Why Shakeology?

OK, I'm hooked on my shakeology. I've been drinking it pretty much daily for over a year. You probably will never see me out & about with shakeology in hand because I drink it for breakfast & I drink it fast!

I can't tell you everything it's done for me. To be honest, I don't really want to find out! I can't give it up! What I do know, I love it. It's like a treat- an ice blended every morning! I love the taste. Some things I have noticed that I didn't even realize - less cravings! I used to NEED something salty and crunchy everyday. Nope. Don't even think about it anymore, unless a basket of chips is plopped down in front of me. I also don't crave sweets anymore, either!

It has also helped me with my moods. Yep. I used to be on a constant roller coaster of ups and downs. Now the ride is a lot smoother. If I miss a shake, I can't explain it, I just feel off- a little lethargic and a smidge grumpy. I also don't have to swallow horse pills anymore- it's got all the vitamins and nutrients I need. I can go on & on about what it's done for others (thyroid, diabetes, depression, weightloss) but I won't. You can read about some of them here.

Go get a bag!

BONUS! BOTTOM OF THE BAG GUARANTEE!  Beachbody believes in this daily dose of dense nutrition so much they guarantee it to the bottom of the bag! Money back guarantee!

or email me for a sample (you've really got to try it more than once to feel the results though!

PIZZA

I decided to write about something I'm passionate about today- PIZZA! Not just any pizza, vegan pizza. And guess what? Tomorrow just happens to be VEGAN PIZZA DAY! There is even a facebook page about it & a pizza crawl in Echo Park. I've always been a huge fan of pizza. The word pizza takes on a whole new meaning when you no longer eat gooey cheese or all that fatty greasy sausage and pepperoni. I am so glad I can still enjoy a good pie without feeling guilty. My husband and I love to go to the local co-op where they sell pre-made cornmeal crusts, pizza sauce & daiya cheese. I pile as many veggies as I can on top. yum. I want some right MEOW! I am so spoiled to live in LA. There are so many vegan pizza options I will never have to fear going pizza-less.  My favorite spots to get some:

Pitfire Pizza : My favorite here is their fall seasonal pizza. It's topped with butternut squash and has a roasted pumpkin seed oil drizzled on top. To die for! Just ask them to make it vegan style.

Zpizza : The Berkeley Vegan is SO good! The veggies are never overcooked and they put big chunks of tomato on top.

And if you can't make it out or your local joints don't cut it, never fear!
Get your pizza kit here!

Some of my favorite pizza topping combos:
• mushroom, olive, onions & bell peppers
• huge chunks of garlic & artichoke hearts
• salad! tossed with dressing (lots of lemon) and plopped on top of the cooked pizza.

My brothers artwork
Now, who's hungry? What are your favorite toppings?

You can still eat healthy and enjoy food! It doesn't have to be scary and bland. Just don't go crazy, everything in moderation & fill up on veggies.

Even if your not vegan, why not go out and celebrate vegan pizza day tomorrow!
Let me know how it goes.

BALANCE

All these concepts we strive for in life: balance, motivation, true happiness, self-control, time management. I have heard that none of these truly exist. That does not mean we shouldn't strive for them. We need to find joy in the journey. I love the idea of balance. To me it means a little bit of everything. I love a little of everything. That is when I find I am happiest. Even when I eat- I like a little of a lot of different things. I prefer a lot of side dishes versus a huge dish of one thing. That is also why I wear so many hats. I find enjoyment doing different thing. What about you? What's your idea of balance?

12 Ways to Lose Weight & Never Find It Again

Action is a skillset

I’m going to share some ideas you may have heard before and if you have I want you to ask yourself these questions today and whenever you hear an idea you have heard before ask yourself  1) Am I applying it 2) Have I mastered it.  If you can’t answer yes to both questions then you need to get the idea at a deeper level and that will help you take it seriously like you have never heard it before.

This is how I help my coaching clients lose weight and keep it off.

Many people feel that if they eat healthy they are “dieting.”  When you eat healthy you are NOT DIETING! You are treating your body right.  Eating healthy or not eating healthy is NOT about reward or punishment.  Ask yourself this question before you eat. "Is what I am about to eat good for my body?"

If the answer is YES then you are not dieting, you are doing what is RIGHT for your body, you are fueling your body with what it needs to work it’s best for you.

2) Get associated to the payoff you get by holding onto the story that you have to eat healthy and exercise and that eating healthy and exercising is a punishment.

Then you have to let go of that payoff.

Often times the payoff is that if we don't eat healthy and exercise we have the perfect ALIBI about why we AREN'T successful.  Again, don't make it about your emotions, it is about your future and your job is to empower yourself to make a decision about how your life will be better with your habits and choices.

At times when I’ve had a particularly hard time dealing with food choices I will ask myself. “What right do I have to decide what I put in my body?”  The answer is that I don’t have the right to decide what I put in my body if it will change my life for the better by adding years of health and happiness to share with my friends and family or cost me time & money from future illness, medications, missed work, disease and death.

3) If you've had a struggled with making wise eating choices for a long period of time you may need to change what you tell yourself. Change BEGINS in language.

You can change your language from "I hate dieting" or "I don’t like to work out" to "I choose to eat healthy", "I choose to workout because it’s good for me" or "I work out so next summer I can wear a bikini confidently in public!"

4) You are going to make mistakes. Sometimes it won’t be pleasant.  Remember, we are human. We make mistakes. But we also have the ability to forgive. So when you blow it just focus on what you can do to learn from your mistake and what you will do to correct it and mark your progress towards your goal.

Have a realistic goal - one large goal broken down into smaller goals. Telling yourself you need to lose 50 pounds is a lot more daunting then telling yourself, I am going to aim for losing 2 pounds this week.

6) Write down your “why”.  Then write a paragraph beginning with what the “hell” or cost would be of not achieving the goal and ending with the “heaven” if you do achieve the goal so you make it more painful to not workout than it is to just do it.  It is also much more likely you will workout if you have a coach like myself holding you accountable to your goal in an encouraging way.

Find a workout that works for YOU! Think of working out as part of your lifestyle, like brushing your teeth. There are many different styles of work outs. Find one that you enjoy and that challenges you to improve. If you get bored of your routine, change it!

8) Make a clearly defined specific time each day to workout so you can condition it into a habit and it becomes easy.  Do this using concentrated blocked time. For example, 1 hour each day from 7 am to 8 am - blocked time means you don’t answer the phone, check your email, surf the internet or allow any distractions during that time.  You are up to 4x more productive when you block your time and eliminate distractions. If you need to move the time block to a different time in the day that is okay but do NOT schedule over it.

9)   Mentally prepare yourself to workout. hype yourself up. Blast your favorite music.  You are a beast! You are an ATHLETE! Now is your time to dominate! Have fun! You can literally tell yourself “This is fun, I’m going to have fun.”

10) If you don’t workout do NOT set an intention to try to make up for the workout you missed the next day.  If you do this you are likely to feel overwhelmed and are less likely to make your goal in the first place.  Instead, just focus on hitting your daily workout goal then once you have that accomplished you will have momentum.  Consistency is key.

11) Give yourself a reward after your daily workout goal and literally pat yourself on the back.  It is important to celebrate even small victories.

12)  NUTRITION is KEY. Working out is ONLY effective when it is paired with eating right. Avoid processed foods. Avoid sugar and empty calories. Load your plate with veggies, beans and whole grains. Limit starchy & fatty foods.

This makes my heart happy.

My sister sent me this picture today from her son's doctor's office. :)
Looks like her doctor supports the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine and hopefully vegan! I just checked out their website and found The Power Plate. It's basically the information above with more examples and also RECIPES! They also have success stories of people who overcame cancer, diabetes and weight issues from changing to a vegan diet. I am so happy I chose to take this path. I truly believe it is a major key to leading a healthy fulfilling life.  Lose weight, feel great, live longer- EAT MORE PLANTS!

Superfood: Moringa

One of the most common questions a plant-based eater gets. I think it's odd that we identify ourselves by our diet. I wonder why it is so important to other's what we eat? It is because food is such a central part to our ideas of being social? We just love being able to categorize people by labels. First world problems. I guess it makes it easier on our brain to lump people into groups than to have to consider each person for the individual they are. Random thoughts...

I decided to look up one of the ingredients in Shakeology. I drink it pretty much everyday—I just know it tastes good, it's good for me and I love the stuff! It makes my mornings so much easier. I wake up, workout, have my shake. My day is planned already thru breakfast. No thinking necessary. I love being on autopilot. Not only does it feel like a daily treat- icy cold sweet deliciousness, it helps curb my cravings and keeps me going til lunch. It is full of so much good stuff. I thought, "Hey, I should find out about what's in it!"

To be honest, I'm not a fact and figures type of person. I just want to know 1. Is it good for me? 2. Does it taste good? I chose to read up on one of the many ingredients, moringa. The leaves are rich in protein, vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C and minerals. Moringa cultivation is becoming widespread in Honduras and is being supported by the government. It is being cultivated in Niger as a primary source of food and nutrients. Sounds like a good thing to me!

West Elm Spring Social

I was invited to a Spring Social last week at the West Elm in Downtown Santa Monica (photo above is from their facebook page). It was a lovely event. Invite only, but the store was open for us to buy and shop as we pleased. The staff was very polite and accomodating. It was awesome.
Local small business owners were set up through the store, selling their wares and services.
There was also a sweet spread of appetizers and some frilly drink.
I avoided it because I am still on the Ultimate Reset, I quickly bypassed a cupcake vendor, too.
I just didn't want to be tempted. Espresso Cielo was there doing pour overs of fresh coffee.
The coffee SMELLED delicious. Sigh... ha! They were telling me how excited they were to have a partnership with Hotcake Bakes, winner of the FoodNetwork's Cupcake Wars with a Tres Leches Spicy Mango cupcake. Sounds good, but probably not vegan. On a side note, I am pretty excited to hear my friend Mallori of Jam Vegan Bakery will be on Cupcake Wars on June 9th with her vegan cupcakes.

Eco Apothecary lugged all her big glass jars over from her boutique near Sunset Junction.
I instantly fell in love with this company. You choose your bottle (or bring your own), fill with whatever you need (shampoo, lotion, hair gel, etc), pick your scent (essential oils and blends the owner, Danielle, creates herself). Everything is organic, vegan, paraben-free & sulphate-free! I love the concept & the story behind the company.I can go on and on but you should just go try it! She also mentioned she'll be back at West Elm on weekends, not sure of the details but I'm sure she'll post about it over on facebook.

Eco Apothecary shares her storefront with EdenCondensed, who was also set up at West Elm. The picture above is from her ETSY shop. She makes cite little mini terrariums with funny little people inside and specializes in small space gardens. I would love to have a small space garden SOMEday. I'm not ready to say soon. I am not very good at gardening and as much as I wish I did, I know I won't devote the time needed to maintain it.

Jaclyn of Spilt Milk & Cookies had the cutest marketing card favors, a tag with her contact info and an inspiring quote on the back tied to a bag of fresh baked cookies. Again, had to dodge the cookies ;)
Spilt Milk & Cookies are boxes of cards with inspirational quotes. They come with a little display stand and are available in many different themes. Awesome, awesome idea. Makes sense to stock-up on these - they make a great gift for anyone!

The Ultimate Reset

My husband and I are currently on Day 3 of the Ultimate Reset.
This is a picture of day 1's lunch: microgreen salad with toasted pumpkin seeds, dressing, and miso soup. This is round 2 for me. I lost 8 pounds and my mom lost 15 (she is starting round 2 soon, along with my Aunt). Weight loss is not the purpose of the Reset but it is an awesome benefit!

The recipes are amazing. You will learn how to fuel your body properly. You will rediscover fruits and vegetables and find creative new ways to do them, maybe even a few you have never tried before! In a nutshell, Beachbody's Ultimate Reset will restore your body to optimum health gently and naturally in 21 days. You can find out more about it HERE.

I was talking to my friend Kathleen last night about her recent experience with the Ultimate Reset. She had me all choked up. I love enabling people to change their lives! :) THANK YOU KATHLEEN & MOM!!!

"I lost 10 lbs during the reset & continue to lose! I'm down at least 1 size. My Mom lost 15 lbs during the reset (keep in mind she can barely walk because she needs a double knee replacement) and she continues to lose. Her asthma, arthritis & depression are remarkably better! She just said to tell you she loves coconut oil & doesn't plan on going back to butter! She said you are making her 71st b-day (April 6th) a lot happier by introducing her to the reset & Shakeology! We will be ordering her the Tai Chi video next.

One thing I can say about the results of the reset is it helped us get out of our "funk". The house we are moving out of is my grandmother's house. They bought it 62 yrs ago. Which means we have had to clean out all of the stuff that has been too hard to do for years. My mom literally has had to go thru her parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, sister's & husband's stuff - all of them are gone so its super depressing & caused the move to stall SEVERAL times. The reset really has helped clear our mind & put things in perspective. We can't thank you enough!"

You have 2 days left to get it on SALE!

If you think this is something you might consider doing in the future, I highly recommend you purchase it right now to take advantage of the savings. On sale or not it is definitely worth it.
YOU are worth it and your body will thank you!

A funny thing I saw someone post.... one bad meal won't make you fat, but one healthy meal won't make you slimmer, either!

what's for lunch?

So after opening my fridge multiple times today - hoping to find something new & delicious that magically appeared, I decided to make a salad. It was magical and delicious! I made a quick dressing of toasted sesame oil, balsamic vinegar and a little agave syrup. A full meal from what my brain was saying was an empty fridge! If I hadn't grabbed a handful earlier, I would've added some nuts on top, too. AND after eating this, I feel amazing! Job well done. So, what's for lunch?

Sweet Nothing

How have you been? Things have been crazy on my end... mostly in my head! I am working on time management (aka self management). Being an entrepreneur takes tons of discipline. No one to show up for but yourself. There is no way you can roll out of bed, show up at the office and then mentally "clock-out" and just float thru your day waiting for time to pass. Every minute counts and every minute is either money in or money out of your pocket. That being said, I kind of clocked out this week. Got so overwhelmed with my tasks I kind of went on overload and shut down. I'm OK with that. It helps me reset. I feel refreshed and ready to go. I just need to learn to plan for these shut downs so it's more of a mini break and less of a mini meltdown! :)

Grateful

5 THINGS I AM GRATEFUL FOR:

  1. I'm grateful for being healthy.
  2. I'm grateful for my husband being so grateful that I am home.
  3. I'm grateful I have the courage to sing my voice out in public (sometimes, lol) even tho I sound terrible.
  4. I'm grateful my parent's house is on beautiful land and it's like a mini-retreat when I visit.
  5. I'm grateful I was able to drive up to visit & spend time with my sisters, nephew and parents.
I can go on & on..... :)

If you wanna fly...

I just found this picture on my computer. I don't remember what it is from. But I like it. :)
It is true and one of the things that I personally struggle with. It is a hard knock when you realize your biggest enemy and the biggest block to your success is YOURSELF! It's so true. Our thoughts are so powerful. They can either lift you up or push you down. It's an amazing awakening once you realize this. You start to see the world with new eyes. Everything and anything is possible for you if you believe in yourself enough to make it happen!

Girl Scout Cookies

So, I did make it thru the season without purchasing one box or eating one single Girl Scout cookie! YAYAYA! However, I did find this AMAZING recipe for raw vegan samoas. Mine didn't come out half as pretty as Miss Betty Rawkers but dayummmm. They were good!!! So, super fattening and super nutty BUT totally clean and delightful. A once a year treat. AND  I can imagine a million other uses for the chocolate icing, that is super sweet and chocolatey and a little like magic shell but 10 times better! SO how did you do? Did you survive the cute little girls slanging "crack" in the form of cookies this year?

To Do Lists

I'm trying to make a habit of writing down my list of things to do everyday. It really is SO important to plan. It does not come naturally to me & it's been a struggle. I know I am most successful when I plan and follow a structure. I prefer to do things on the fly. However, if I am serious about succeeding I need to learn to do things that are not so comfortable and natural for me but those that make me productive and get results! That applies pretty much across the board! I have been using this app, "Awesome Note" - it's pretty cool. Breaks things down and makes "To Dos" a little easier to handle. how organized are you? Any tips to share?

Where will YOU be a year from today?

This is a tool I use to keep myself on track. On those days when I just feel like throwing in the towel. C'mon! EVERYBODY has those days! I remind myself that it's just a funk- it'll pass. When I'm frustrated with my lack of results or lack of progress I think... where will I be a year from now if I give up today? Where will I be a year from now if I DON'T quit? It's very effective. Try it.

The Dirty Dozen

Have you heard of the Dirty Dozen? It's a comprehensive list of the fruits and vegetables you should consider buying organic. They are the most likely to be highly contaminated by pesticides. As I look over the list, it makes sense. Most of the things on there have very thin skins - most likely easier to absorb the nasty chemicals that are sprayed on them. I suppose the loose, leafy greens have a lot of nooks and crannies where the chemicals can pool up and marinate.  I'm so glad to see that avocados are on the low pesticide list! I love stocking up on them when they are in season. If you are trying to save a little cash and also eat healthy & organic- not easy! Here is a simple way to work around it a little- buy organic when you can but know that you can get by with the items that our lowest in pesticides (and maybe stock up when they are on sale. Mmmmm.. recipes already popping up in my head. An avocado mango salsa? Cabbage soup? Tropical GRILLED fruit salad? yum....
